DBT Skills Parent Group

Thursdays (8 week modules) 5:30-7:15pm –

As parents and their children who struggle with emotion regulation cautiously emerge from the isolation and division of COVID times and a divisive society, support and skills are necessary to provide the structure, care and hope needed to give our children the capability to safely and courageously navigate the world aligned with our values.

ODBTMC is offering a kind and validating environment for parents who are struggling with their children, adolescents and/or young adult’s emotional and behavioral challenges to feel supported and learn skills .  The eight-week course offers skills to help manage the parenting dilemmas that arise around these challenges. Rather than perfectionistic standards, this course is realistic and warm about what it is like.

The course includes how to balance the need for both clear structure and nurture, how to take care of both yourself and your family, how to foster both growth and safety and how to respond without adding fuel to a reactive environment.

Most importantly, this is offered in the context of being realistic about what one can control and how to instill faith when protective energy is not helpful.

The course uses tools and skills from DBT and other sources. DBT is a skills-based treatment developed to help people who struggle with severe emotion dysregulation and invalidation.  DBT based skills in this unit include skills from; Dialectical Parenting Dilemmas, Middle Path skills, Distress Tolerance, Mindfulness, Validation and Emotion Regulation skills.

The course also addresses challenges with partners and other involved adults in the best interest of your child consistent with your own parenting, cultural and family values.
